cPanel Webmail Hosting

cPanel comes with an in-built, intuitive Webmail designed for business or personal use.

With your cPanel account, you have the ability to:

  • create multiple email addresses or forwarders
  • add, manage, and delete email accounts
  • stay connected with calendar capabilities
  • configure automatic email response messages
  • create shared calendars
  • create mailing lists
  • track email delivery
  • identify problems with your mail-related DNS records for your domains
  • create, store, and manage GnuPG keys
  • and get protected by various layers of spam protection

But there is an impressive feature that even the most adept cPanel users may sometimes miss. And that is cPanel Webmail's plus addressing.

What is Email Plus Addressing?

Plus addressing (or sub addressing) is an email feature that adds a plus character and string after an email account username.

With plus(+) addressing, you can:

  • reduce the number of email accounts you have to manage
  • track potential abuse easily
  • and help you better organize incoming mail

How To Create An Email Account with Plus(+) Addressing

When creating the email account, you can tell cPanel how to handle plus addresses when the appropriate folder does not already exist.

Of course, you already know how to create an email account or add a new email account via cPanel.

But as a refresher on how to create a new email account:

  1. Log in to your cPanel.
  2. Scroll down to the Email section or pane.
  3. Click on Email Accounts (cPanel » Home » Email » Email Accounts)
  4. Click Create an Email Account.
  5. Enter a new email address in the Username text box; e.g. support@buyrobotdogs.store
  6. Click on the Domain menu to select the domain on which you want to create the email account.
  7. Either select "Set password now" or "Send log-in link to alternate email address" and enter an email address to send a password creation link to this address.

The interface that will appear will display the account creation settings, as well as the account's quota status.

  8. Enter a custom disk storage size to limit the account’s email quota size or use the default value.
  9. Next is where you need to make the decision on whether to enable plus addressing or not.

For example, you can select one of the following settings:

    • Automatically Create Folders: what this means is that when you receive an email that uses plus addressing and the folder does not already exist, the system will create a new folder for the message. The system will deliver the message to that new folder.
    • Do Not Automatically Create Folders: what this mean is that when you receive an email that uses plus addressing and the folder does not already exist, the system will not create a new folder. The system will deliver the message to the INBOX folder.

If you are creating this for someone else, select the Send welcome email with instructions to set up a mail client checkbox to send the user mail client set-up instructions (it is always a good idea to leave this with the default setting).

  10. Click Create to create the account and return to the Email Accounts interface.

With this done, all you have to do to use plus addressing is to use something like: support+support@buyrobotdogs.store or support+sales@buyrobotdogs.store, etc.

The email account you created with cPanel would automatically recognize these messages and place them in the list mailbox.

What Happens When I Can't Receive Emails With Plus(+) Addressing?

If you cannot find the email anywhere in RoundCube after using support+order@buyrobotdogs.store, it is probably caused by a configuration problem.

As stated earlier, this option is enabled by default when you create a new email account but can be (or may have been) manually toggled to OFF.

To resolve this issue, you need to verify that plus (+) addressing is enabled for the email account.

You can do that by:

  1. Logging to the cPanel account that contains the email account
  2. Clicking on the Email Accounts icon under the Email section
  3. Clicking on the "Manage" button for your email account
  4. Visually verifying that the following option is currently set to "On"

Webmail RoundCube

  1. Log in to Webmail for the email account
  2. Click on the RoundCube
  3. Click on the Settings button
  4. Click on the Folders section
  5. Toggle on the plus address folders that have been created

If you are using other mail clients such as Gmail, Apple Mail, Outlook, etc, check that your POP settings are configured so that your emails are left on your cPanel server.

  • Outlook: Go to your Accounts, click Advanced, and then Leave a copy of messages on the server.
  • Apple Mail: On the "Advanced" tab, uncheck the box next to "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message," if available.
  • Thunderbird: On the "Server Settings" tab, check the box next to "Leave messages on the server."
